Learning Differences in ESL: Learning Differences in ESL was born when Maiko could not keep up with all the articles and links that she found useful for supporting her students with diagnosed and suspected learning and physical differences. She also learned from her second study on learning differences and Intensive English Programs that there are many teachers and administrators who want to learn more about this topic. She’s hopeful that Learning Differences in ESL can serve as a resource website where teachers and administrators can get together and share ideas. You can also find more resources geared towards multilingualism for Pre-K students with disabilities at the sister site, https://multilingualeugene.wordpress.com/ .

Maiko Hata has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and English Communication from Doshisha Women’s College in Kyoto, Japan, and a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She earned her second Master’s degree in Special Education at the University of Oregon. She has taught English and advised international students for 20 years, including as a Senior Instructor at American English Institute, University of Oregon. She has given workshops as a plenary speaker at various institutes on the topic of supporting English learners with disabilities. She has also presented at international conferences including TESOL, NAFSA, EnglishUSA, and Council for Learning Disabilities. In her past time, she enjoys chasing after her two children whom she and her husband are raising bilingually in Japanese and English. For more information on Maiko, please visit her LinkedIn site.
